THE OLD FOLK DANCE
LARGE CROWD AT CITY HALL
The dancing steps of a day long passed were revived at an "old time social and dance held in the City Hall last night, and concluded one of the most spectacular series of events vet. undertaken in Gisborne. Arranged and conducted by Miss .Rees and Mrs. Phil of the Women s Welcome Committee, the function was well attended and all arrangements were carried through without a hitch, reflecting great credit on the organisers. The entertainment was essentially tor the benefit of the pioneers and included a very tine selection of old-time dances and songs, into the spirit of which all entered, swinging round merrily to the strains of a concertina, to which many of the elderly persons present danced long years ago, or to the music played by Mrs. llcency's orchestra. As they danced, all sung heartily some of the’ more popular present-day songs, or entered into the choruses of some oldtime pieces. The old-time dances uere thoroughly enjoyed by the pioneers, as was the whole programme. The younger people left the floor to their elders and were most interested. The hall was completely packed by both pioneers and young people, who enjoyed equally well'the items prepared hv the various dancing mistresses. The following items were given: “Home, Sweet Home,” bv .Miss Gladys banning- Irish recitation and dapee, Miss Stella Brailfield; “The Little Brown dug,” Mr. V. ’Hurre; a set of Lancers danced by Misses L. Ferris, K. Khali, T. Swinnei'ton, N. Wilson, C. Williams, K. Sidebottom, T. Hill and M. Scarf.-, with Messrs. S. Smith. 11. Martin, ,T. Robinson, L. Snowsill, I), Uennessy, T. and W- ■ MoKeague, and W. Gram; Scottish reel, danced by members of the Scottish Society; the minuet, danced h v Misses F. Cox! E. Cox, B. Dunbar, R. Waucliop. K. and N. Pilt-ar % 11. Sexton, and P. Seymour; “ Old Folks at Home,” by Mr’. Bignell ; a seliotlische. played oil the aceordeon by Mr. W’. Robb," in which vofuug and old joined in dancing; “ Kack-a-day.” by Miss Rita Sexton, and “The Mipsliip Mite, by Mr. C. G. Hloore. The young folk held the floor while the older generation was at supper, at which Mr. V. D. Lvsnar, M.P., extended a hearty welcome to the, guests of honor, hoping they had had il I |n PP' day, and wishing them luck and pvosIpei’ity in the future. Later Air. Rohh thanked the committee for the enjoyable time they had had. The Women s Welcome Committee were to be congratulated on the success of the function.
During the evening a bouquet, was presented to Mrs. Phil Barry by Miss Roes, on the occasion of her birthday, and because of her invaluable work in connection with the evening. Airs. Barry suitably responded 1 and mentioned that hut for the help of Miss Rees the evening might not have been such an unbounded success. Later the young people were allowed on the floor! Ligliton’s orchestra providing the music.
