COULD NOT BOARD RENOWN
CAPTAIN SULIVAN BARRED BY POLICE MELBOURNE, April 26. The captain of one of His Majesty's ships of war might be omnipotent when on board his ship and placing up and down the quarter deck. \But once let him leave that sanctuary and step ashore, and his glory and power fades. He becomes even more insignificant if he happens to run foul of a policeman used to sea captain’s tales. Captain Sulivan, officer in command of H.M.S. Renown, met such a policeman on Saturday. The latter detected him in the act of feloniously trying to creep aboard his own ship. Captain Sulivan was ashore, and to keep back the crowds who wanted to inspect the Renown police were forced to erect barriers. Orders were given that no unauthorised person was to pass through. Captain Sulivan essayed the yenlure. hut the arm of law collared him. " “I'm Captain Sulivan. in charge of the Renown,” lie said. .'I he constable merely smiled. “Look here," said the captain, “not. even the Duke of York has a 'greater right to go aboard that, boat. I tell vou I am tho captain." The‘ constable’s smile became broader. “Tell that to the marines," he said. Captain Sulivan could not produce his pass, and very disgruntled had to return ashore. A lew minutes later he was in touch’ with H.M.A.S. Adelaide
by wireless. *A launch was sent from the Adelaide, Captain Sulivan was picked up and deposited at the tradesman’s entrance at the gangway on the remote side of the pier. He has not been ashore since.
