Confiscated Lands

The confiscated' lands commission concluded' its sitting in Wellington yesterday morning, and the Commissioners will now proceed to examine the mass of evidence before them preparatory to framing their recommendations for the consideration of Parliament. It was announced that many fresh .petitions had come .to hand, in which claims were advanced regarding burial places, fishing reserves, etc., but Sir William Sim observed that inquiry into those matters would bo useless as lvo could not see vvliat relief could be given. Tho places could not be ,restored to the, natives. Counsel appearing for some of tho petitioners raised a laugh by announcing that one of the sacred, places referred to was now a racecourse.—P.A.
