DEPARTURE FROM MELBOURNE (Elec. Tel. Copyright- United Press Assn. (Received May 12, noon.) MELBOURNE, -May 12. The Duke and Duchess of York were enthusiastically farewelled by the public when they passed through on their way to the Renown. Brief stops were made at Spencer street and Flinders street stations. The Royal party left the trainat Montagu and drove through surging crowds to the pier. The Renown left at an early hour this morning for West Australia. STUDENTS AND DUKE MELBOURNE 'VARSITY RAG MPLBOPBNK, April 27. ".lust a little ride round the University ground. Come on. Albert, be a good sport !" With those words the Duke of York was inveigled to a waiting landau at the University to-day. He was then provided with a comic opera staff, dressed in fancy costumes. Because the 1 Duke was not allowed by officialdom to visit the country, the students 'decided to bring the country to the Duke. Before the Royal landau were led. by typical stage country yokels, two cows, two sheep, and a goat. With three dutriders on each horse, drawing the carriage, the Duke inspected all the strongposts, and at the Chemistry School had to leave his carriage to receive, on behalf of the Duehess, the degree of "X. V. Plum." The address concluded with the words. •'(live our kind regards to the old man and the missus." At last they let him go. caring not a jot for the honor that had been done him earlier in the dav, when the Chancellor of the University, Sir John MaeFaHand, had conferred upon him the degree of Doctor of Laws.
