TOTALISATOR RETURNS-A UNIVERSAL DECREASE. Although there is flat racing in New Zealand during the winter, the flat racing season proper ended on Saturday last, and racegoers can now look forward to the jumping campaign. The. great feature of the season has been tin* almost universal shrinkage in totalisator turnover, and the following table will give an idea of-the decreases. The returns for the clubs quoted are from the opening of the season and compared with their positions on the eve of the winter campaign 12 months ago: May, 1926 May, 1927 £ £
Avondale has not been included, as it has been racing this season at Ellerslie, with the result that its totalisator figures show a slight increase. It will bo noted that the only club with an increase is Wairarapa, duo undoubtedly to holiday dates and patronage from Wellington. At first sight the C.J.O. does not look in such bad case, but the previous year showed n deficit of £BO,OOO, which has caused the retrenchment recently announced. Minor clubs have not been included, nor Southland, where the programmes include trotting events, but I the figures are sufficient to indicate the ; general trend.
