THIRD EDITION. JUBILEE SPORTS
ENORMOUS CROWD OVAL PROVES TOO SMALL A very largo proportion of Gisborne's population must have been at the Oval this afternoon, and never before has such an enormous gathering been seen there. The grandstand sufficed to accommodate but a fraction of the huge throng, and on ail sides the ground was crowded with a dense mass of people. As the, attendance continued to increase, it became evident that the ground was all too small for the gathering. Without a doubt the meeting was the most successful' ever held in Gisborne. and the gate and grandstand takings must been very considerable. A salute of motor-car horns heralded the arrival of the official party. < behalf of the stand was reserved for the officials and the old identities, and the seating accommodation there was packed to its'utmost. The decorated cars parked on one side of the ground made a bright and attractive display. The advertised time for the commencement of the programme was 2 p.m.. hut it was well after 2.30 o'clock before, the ground could bo cleared' sufficiently to enable the first .vent, to be contested. The programme comprised professional athletic, events, soccer, a Maori display, and displays by the Y.M.O.A. and Boy Scouts, in addition to the final of the Rugby seven-a-side tournament. TIIK RESULTS. The athletic events resulted as follow: Quarter-mile Cycle Race.—P Dolman 3, Hills ft, Davis 3. Half-mile Cycle Race.—Hills 1, Davis 2, Howell 3. ' A potato race on cycles was won by E.
