STORM DAMAGE

DIVERSION CUT WORK DELAYED The demolition of the staging and trolley line from which the additions to the eastern wall of the diversion cut were being made, will delay the progress of - this work for some time. The damage occurred last when heavj waves dashed over and through , the temporary wooden • structure. None pi the permanent worJjjt on the wall was.] affected. -*J| The demolished staging was built om fairly Jight piling, and comprised ;*' ' . superstructure of heavy baulks, on which ran a trolley line, which in turn carried a light type of winch and derrick. The latter apparently caught the full force of the seas, for it toppled over, carrying a portion of the staging with it. The seaward end of the structure was completely demolished,, while for some distance towards the shore the Staging is badly twisted, and probably will have to be rebuilt. The timber from the more seriously-damaged portion : was washed into the diversion cut, and was being collected this morning. The spud pontoon, moored at the end of the staging and eniployed m! placing ,t h e h eavy caissons, by. means of which the wall is being extended, was undamaged by the. seas.
