STIRRING WELCOME
PREMIER AT RARATONGA A DELIGHTFUL DAY (Elec. Tel. Copyright—United Press Assn.) (A. & N.Z.C.A. Special Correspondent) (Received February i), noon). RARATONGA, Feb. 9. After many days’ tropical downpour of rain, the sun shone brightly at Raratonga for the Prime Minister’s first landing in New Zealand territory this morning on his return from the Imperial Conference. After official calls by the DeputyCommissioner and administrative officers the distinguished visitors were rowed ashore in the eight-oared barge, and were enthusiastically welcomed by a large concourse of both races. Brilliant, colored hibiscus, and other tropical flowers, with patriotic flags made a vivid setting. Representative nrikis. mataiapos, and rangatiras expressed their unfeigned delight in welcoming Mr, Coates again. Replying to the addresses of welcome. Air Coates read the King’s Message, acknowledging the loyal tribute of the Raratongan people, and expressing continued regard for them. Mr. Coates expressed satisfaction at. the Imperial Conference, which would enhance the unity of all the Empire peoples.
Briefly dealing with commercial subjects Mr. Coates indicated that lie was making every effort to increase the island trade, and referred to the resulting importance of fostering tropical agricultural study in New Zealand’s Pacific territories. A. motor excursion, a native feast, and an afternoon reception completed a delightful day. At Papeete Air. Coates received a cordial welcome from the Governor and British Consul. Fine weather was experienced for the tvans-I’aciflc voyage. All of the party are welt.
