The actions of a young Makotuku resident yesterday disturbed the pastoral quietude of the -country township, and the excitement resulted in the lJannevirke police being summoned to arrest the individual, who had allegedly run amok. Constables Canning mid Gibbs went to within a slioit d.stance of Alatamau to “ike up a strategic position to intercept the mail, who was reported to he heading south by motor car. They had j iLst stopped when the individtfiil appeared in a car and allegedly attempted to point a .303 rifle at Constable Canning, who grasped tho rifle by the barrel, and Constable Gibbs pulled tile weapon away, after which the man was taken from the, ear, violently struggling, and roped and handcuffed. Subsequently lie was brought to Dannevirke. When captured, the rifle he had contained one cartridge, and four other cartridges were m ins possession, also an unloaded pea-rifle, the man was subsequently medically examined, and the decision of the doctors dispensed with the necessity of bringing him before the court oil several serious charges. , . . The unfortunate fel.ow developed strange symptoms in the morning, allegedly going about Makotuku holding up residents at the point of the gun, and after he had examined any paper., in their possession allowing them to go. Fortunately nothing serious resulted.
