I ESCAPE IN HAMILTON i MEN BURROW UNDER BUILDING (Per Press Association.) HAMILTON, this day. A sensational escape from custody was made early this morning by the two young men, George Huia Brewer and George Curtis, who were in the lockup at the Hamilton police station on remaud on charges of the theft of a car. Accused were before the Court yesterday and were due to appear again on Thursday night. The constable paid the usual periodical visits to the veil during the night, and at 5 a.m. discovered the two men missing. Several floor hoards which had been ripped from their fastenings and a. heap of earth scooped from beneath indicated the method of their escape. Even then the exit was very narrow, and it must have been difficult work worming their way through. A small portion of the weather-boarding which obstructed the passage was smashed. The cell is in aj wooden building- situated 10yds in the j rear of the station.

Brewer and Curtis, it will be remembered, were arrested in Frankton last Friday night on charges of the theft of an Essex car from Oiiaupo. Brewer had escaped from custody when arrested at To Awamutu on Thursday with Petersen, another Borstal boy, who was also charged with the theft of another car, and who was remanded to Auckland. Petersen was escorted there yesterday.

The country is being scoured, by the polio**, for the escapees. Brewer is sft. lOin in height, with fair hair and an open countenance, and was dressed in a light grey suit, with glffee patent shoes. Curtis is' dark, sharp" featured. sft Bin, unshaven, and was wearing a dark grey tweed suit. Both are of good appearance, and are aged about 20 years. Neither was wearing a hat.
