U.S. AND C. AMERICA

SENATORS NjAKE TROUBLE

WASHINGTON, Dec. 29.

In Nicaragua the American Government seems to have backed the wrong horse. Admiral Latimer reported to-day that the Diaz Government, which is backed by the United States, had been soundly thrashed by the so-called' rebels. Meanwhile, officials of the Slate Department are feeling more uncomfortable with the threats of an investigation by Senator Borah as to why America should have meddled at all, and they are disturbed by sharp criticisms from South American newspapers. "La Jfaciori," of Santiago (Chile), declares that the intervention contradicts the principle of self-determination sustained by the U.S. Government i" the past, and especially by President Wilson.
