FINED TOR BOOKMAKING

Richard Loxon, 50, described as a bookmaker in a large way of business, was fined £3O to-day. It, was stated he had been using a bootmaking shop as. a cover for some years.

Stanley William Findhiy was lined a similar amount for carrying on business in an hotel bar, and Gerald Stevenson, barman, was fined £25.

PROSECUTIONS UNDER NEW ACT

The- ih-Jt prosecutions under the Police Offenders Amendment Act of last session, giving power to the police to arrest without warrant persons they have reasonable cause to believe have insufficient lawful means of support, were heard by Mr. Riddle, S.M., to-day. who had been .sleeping out on Mt. Victoria being advised to secure work. They were convicted and ordered to come up for sentence if culled upon within six months.

Enquiry made in official quarters at the meat works this morning elicited the information that an agreement had boon reached between the company and the butchers satisfactory to both sides and that work was proceeding. This means that the 50 butchers previously engaged before the dispute have resumed work, and that the free laborers who were slaughtering have returned home.

DEATH FROM EXPOSURE

An inquest was held at Winton on William John Walsh, 47, a farm hand, whose body was found in the scrub at Bpriughillfe. Deceased hail been missing since November 14. There were no digits of violence on the body. A verdict was returned that death was clue 10 exposure.
