Commander Marsdeu, in an address to the Millions Club, said what surprised him when he arrived in Australia was to fiitd the people still arguing about tho Singapore base. All Britain sought there was to build a dry dock capable of holding the largest battleships and aeroplane carriers in the fleet. Singapore was the strategic centre of the world's seas. After blowing a full gab- of condemnation against Communists and all rjieir doings, he added: "People think England is down and out, but you judge :i man by the way he comes out for the next round, and believe me England svill never be knocked out." .
HASTENING PROSPERITY
LONDON, Dec 12. Referring to the order for the new] Singapore floating dock which has been placed at Wallseud-on-Tyue, the Syren and Shipping Illustrated states: "The placing of this order is bound 1 to have a si rung moral effect and will! [end to hasten the return to prosper-j Ity, for which the signs and portents arc now i c encouraging than they. have been for many weary months. It has been stated that the dock will. cost about £1,200,000, and will pro-' vide employment for large numbers' of men for about, two years." j
