(Per Press Association.) AUCKLAND, last night
The Hon, R. F. Bollard, in a statement tonight concerning trouble with the Natives at Taupo over fishing rights, said the interests of the Natives had been closely watched' by the Government, and he was pleased to say that not only were the majority of the Maoris complying with the the agreement'and the legislation passed, out also many of them were rendering valuable assistance in carrying the Act into force.
"These natives," continued Mr Bollard, "have shown a line Spirit, bin) T regret, however, that a few of still fail to recognise that an honorable agreement Was entered into, and that by interferinn- with anglers they are committing" a breach of the law and are liable to penalties, provided. 1 take this opportunity of stating that the Government has taken unusual pains to explain the position fully, and thnt in the interests both of anglers and of unlives, it is intended to enforce the la\V strictlv. and anv natives from now onwards* found interfering with fishermen in breach of the law will be prosecuted. I hope it will not become necessary for the Government to take extreme measures, and *hat the natives who have been intereferihg with anglers will realise it- is in, their own interests not tc interfere, and* to allow anglers to fish in the Taupo district fisheries without further molestation. I should ( not like to see prosecutions take place,"
