UNWANTED

SHIPPING CONCESSION.

MELBOURNE, Jan. 1. Although the Federal Government has issued a proclamation permitting British ships to carrv inter-State passengers to Hobart, it is unlikely the oversea companies will avail themselves ot the permission. Prominent shipping men yesterday recalled a previous occasion when the Navigation Act provisions we>re suspended to cope with a Melbourne Cup rush of traffic. The seamen promptly refused to work one steamer which had booked passengers for Melbourne, and the owners were caused considerable expense and delay. The general opinion is that the ns*< of industrial trouble is not worth the comparatively small amount of traffic. This state of affairs, however, may be altered at the opening of the apple stescm when oversea steamers will call nt Hobart to lead apples.
