KNIFE AND JEMMY
UNDER PRISON FLOOR . ■ II OB ART, Dec. 20. Evidence at the inquiry into the recent escape oi! four convicts frolii Hobart gaol showed that by some meanu or other iho prisoner Dobsoh got possession of ft steel pick-head, with which the escapees forced padlocks. Downs had a master key, with which boy locks were opened. The key was apparently obtained from outside the gaol. The deputy-governor, Mr. Pope, said he thought the pick-head, winch is 2ft. inn. long, might have been secreted beneath the mess-room floor. Various weapons had been found there, 'including ,r very dangerous knife and a heavy steel jemmy. The knife was made so that it could be. used as a screw-driver, while the jemmy was described by a member of the commission as the most perfect he had ever seen
