NUHAKA'S ANNUAL SHOW.

(Herald Reporter). Dame Fortune certainly smiled upon the Nuhaka A. & P. Society on N,ow Year's Day on the occasion of their twenty-third annual show. There was a record attendance, and the exhibits, both in number and quality, reflected thefair rieuson that has been experienced in the Nuhaka district for stock and farm produce. After a week or .10 days' wet spell, which had seriously affected the promotion of outside gatherings, the weather broke line on Saturday for the show held on the society's picturesquely situated grounds at Nuhaka. Nearly £IOO wa.s paid for admission, almost double the amount collected last year, when heavy rain was experienced on show day. The society owns the freehold of the property and during recent years many improvements have beeu effected. Several further extensive improvements are contemplated by this progressive body whose membership increased considerably during the year. Those present on Saturday wore glad of .the opportunity of lunching under the trees, while the cool breeze made the conditions exceedingly pleasant. Oars and vehicles w'erc early on the road bound for the show and a tally made in flic afternoon showed that there were almost 200 motors on the grounds, greater than the number the previous year. The attendance was representative of the whole district and included a number of Gisbornites. GOOD EXHIBITS. As might be expected in a dairyingdistrict, the -cattle exhibited were good and had classes of store cattle been included in the catalogue there would have been insufficient pens to accomraodato them. The competition in the Hlieep classes was good, but Lincolns appeared to be passing out of favor. The pigs, which' do not usually attract great attention, created great interest owing to the splendid exhibits entered by sfr. C. Cullen, who is making a study of the export of pork. The pigs exhibited showed great promiso for the future,, and the Tamworth 'boar which took first prize scaled over 6001bs at the age of two years and five months. The pigs entered in the classes of best sow and of a pen of porker pigs for export were all from the one litter and were of remarkably even quality. There was a good display of vegetables and the judge had •considerable difficulty in making his decision. Owing tp the show-being held too early there was only a"poor entry of fruit. There were numerous exhibits of flowers and cooking, all being of good quality. The children's classes, too, were by no means neglected. For the first time in the history of the society poultry classes were included and the number of b,irds shown was remarkably good, auguring well for next season.

The Nuhaka show has a reputation for the QuaJixT Q f the horses competing there and those entered this year wqre up to the standard. TJhe remount classes and the Maori hacks were wnll presented. Some good jumping was seen, and although several riders were thrown no serious accidents were reported. lecture given stock by Mr. Knight, of Patutahi, who judged the dairy classes, wos muoh appreciated, The funds of the society were augmented by the sale of produce which had been donated. The members of the society should certainly feel gratified at the success of this year's function, of which no little credit was due to the secretary, ilt. P. J. Brewster. Under the president, Air. Q. D. Todd,, the members of the committee and the stewards carried out their duties well, and i assisted greatly the juflges in the discharge of their tasks.
