CHARGE AGAINST SPARROWS
SUSPECTED OF INCENDIARISM Has anybody ever suspected the sparrow as an incendiary's' Three or four fires in racecourse stands in recent years have never been, traced to definite causes, the stand at Wingatui this year being one of thorn. Tho suggestion as to the sparrow arises out of a statement made at Wingatui by Mr. G. E. Curry, tho stipendiary steward. He said that at the Otago Hunt Club's races, in September, whilst the stand was burning, he saw a man throw a lighted cigarette on the ground, and a sparrow promptly pounce upon it and fly away with tho tube in its beak. The sparrow could have had no use for the cigarette, except for nest-building, and the eaves of stands, in common with other buildings, are favorite nesting places.
