DOBSON MINE FLOODING

FINDING WORK FOR IDLE MEN

UREYMOUTH, last night, As Uw result of rains to-day, the Grey river rose lo a level this morning that put Ihc pumps out of action at the Duoson mine, so operations had to be discontinued. The flooding, however, has not been completely stopped., as Water from the mine dam" is being diverted by i* box drain to the main dip and surface water from streams is also being diverted'into the mine. It is possible this will accomplish Iho flooding more speedily. The Minister of Mines and the Minister of Public Works, replying to telegrams from the unjuu president, Mr. Sineatou, intimate that endeavors arc being made to find work for'idle miners at t|io estate Colliery, also in making a rgjjq between Blackball and Bruiiner u-ud on other public works. Evidence of the fire's activity was further given tin's afternoon by two explosions within the mine. The first one occurred at Rls p.m. and the second at 3.15 p.m. The only external evidence was the loud sound of the explosion S \and a volume of smokp.

People who left their homes at North Dobsoii on Friday evening in fear of further explosions, remain still at the residences of fneiuj.s further down the township. After'the mine has been flooded another task will begin—thai of unw?te.ving—the. duratjou of which is uncertain. It is not expected tlnit production will resume within two months as much repair, worlc will be entailed by the effects of the replied explosions. * A fire and the water relief fi'j'nd has been set up, including the ehairnieh of the various local bodies.
