TOKOMARU BAY NOTES
(Herald Correspondent),
A crowd of happy picnickers journeyed to the springs at To Puia. on Sunday,' in glorious weather. Miy and Mrs/Cot - terill, who have charge of the Springs reserve, had laid themselves out to provide afternoon tea for tho visitors, who gladly paid the small charge that was made, the proceeds going to the hospital. A number also made use of the mineral baths. A number of Te Puia and Tokomaru ladies gave assistance, and most of tho eatables were donated. As a result o'f this enterprise the hospital funds wilt benefit by £7. Tokomaru residents are looking forward to the concert to be given here on December 16 by members of the Glsborne Savage Club, in aid of the hospital building fund.
BUSINESS GOOD ON COAST. A pleasing' : contrast to the somewhat gloomy reports of poor business in other centres, is the statement made by a Coast store manager to-day. "We have no cause to complain," he said. "In fact business throughout the winter; and spring months has been up to previous standards." It is found that with the great number of motor lorries now in use on the stations, and the improved roading conditions, the buying is spread evenly over the whole year, instead of being crowded into the summer, months, as it was when horse-drawn vehicles and bad roads were the vogue. Most business people in Tokomaru township report that though a "hard winter" had been forecasted, the returns have proved this to be a false prophecy. The township is rapidly becoming "bowserised." Already three firms have commenced to instal fuel pumps. The harbor master at Tokomaru Bay, Captain Plummer, reports that November was a busy morith. The ftet tonnage of vessels which' entered the harbor during that period was 12,380. This included one overseas liner, the Hororata, which was loading wool, and 24 coastal vessel.
Mr. Lee, of Blair, Mason, Lee and Brown, consulting engineers, recently visited the bay to inspect and report on the harbor. It is expected his report will be available slfbrtly after Christmas. *,-'•'!
