Colonel J. J. Esson, C.M.G., has been appointed chairman of the Public Service Appeal Board during the absence from the Dominion of Mr. Peter Barr. Mr. H. T. Milnes, one of the oldest, if not the oldest, wool buyers in New Zealand, has been elected chairman of tho Wool Buyers' Association, in succession to the'late Mr. Walter Hill. Mr. 0. Lawrence Taylor has been elected president of the New Zealand Dental Association. He will hold office until the end of 1928, and will have the unusual honor of presiding over two successive conferences.
Among tho Niagara's passengers en route to Australia was Mr. W. L. Baillieu, one of tho Commonwealth's foremost financiers, who started life asi a bank clerk, " passing rich on £SO a year," as ho says. Mr. BajHicu was for several years leader of tho Legislative Council of Victoria. Ho retired threo or four years ago to devote him 'self to business and private interests. lie i.s returning to Australia after a lengthy holiday abroad with his two daughters.
