Several breaches of the Licensing Act j were alloood' against a number of persons before. Mr. E. C. Lcvvcy,, S..M.,■ ah the Gisbome Magistrate's t'onrt. this afternoon. Daniel Murphy, licensee of the Record Reign hotel, was charged with selling liifjuor after hours, and also with exposing liqiior for sale alter hours. Mr. L. T. Burn aid appeared fur the defendant, who pleaded guilty. Senior-Sergeant F'itzpatrick sairLthat at 8.25 p.m. on November 27, Sergeant Dempsey found six men, all of Avhom had "lasses of liquor. The, slide into the bar was open, and everything was lit up. All the men had admitted they went there to' get liquor. Last December the defendant had been fined $1 for keeping his premises open for the sale of liquor, but he had been absent on that occasion. Mr. Burnard' said that the barman was taking stock in the bar, and Mr. Murphy was working at his books. The men had come in and, •unknown to Mr. Murphy, the barman supplied them with liquor. Mr, Murphy had been unaware of what was goino- on, and was therefore little to blame. For six years Mr. Murphy had been in charge of hotels in tho district, and last December was the first occasion he had been before the Court. The Magistrate warned defendant that he woidd either lose his license or have it endorsed if ho appeared a sain. He would be fined £lO and costs. The charge of exposing liquor for sale Was then withdrawn. BARMAN FINED £lO. JameS' Goldie was charged that on November 37 he supplied liquor to Cornelius O'Cdnnell after hours. Air. L. T. Burnard appeared for defendant, who pleaded guilty. Mt. Burnard pointed out that whero master and serv-ant were bofh charged there should be some mitigation of "the penalty. The Magistrate convicted him *and fined him £lo' and costs.
