HUGE SAVING POSSIBLE LESS TIME AND LABOR (Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. (Received November 20, 11 a.in.) NEW YORK, Nov. 28. At Philadelphia -Professor Godfrey Dewey, of Harvard University, addressing tho Engbsh Language Congress, advocated a revision of the alphabet to a system of 24 consonants. 12 vowels, four dipthongs and a symbol for the word “the.” lie declared that this scheme would save one billion dollars yearly. He explained that with the new alphabet fewer symbols would be needed to express thoughts, and millions of tons less paper would be necessary. Books ami newspapers would be smaller and lighter, with a consequent saving of time and labor. Professor Dewey declared that the greatest problem of printed English to-day was typographical.
