ENGLAND FULL OF GAIETY
VISITOR SEES CHANGE. LOS ANGELES, October 6. “Color, humor and lightheartedness are spreading m England to a point where there is a danger that t{ie English will surpass the in these qualities,” declared Or. Erank Oyer, pastor of the Wilshire Boulevard Congregational Church, here in an address on ponditions in England. Or. Dyer has recently returned from a two months’ visit in Britain. The subject of his address was “Is England Ruined'!” He answered this question by asserting that if* England is ruined, he lound no evidence of it during his sojourn there. “Britain has recently passed through a crisis, the general strike, but to appearances she has recovered from the demoralisingi effect of that crisis,” lie said. “The strike was a warning to all parties, however, of the danger of such a movement. Everybody is agreed that tho unions overshot the mark in calling this strike, and it is not likely that such a demonstration will take place again. The unions have lost prestige to such an extent that it will take at least ten years before they will be back in the position of power they were before the
strike. “I was particularly struck by the abtlity of the British to enjoy themselves, their humor, and their tendency to bright colors in clothing and even in their houses. Time was that everybody wore sober colors in England, and English homes were depressing by their sadness of hue. Now they*re building California bungalows with brilliant red roofs and their wearing. npparel show vivid coloring in large measure. “The Britons have always been regarded as devoid of humor, but on this visit. I found them giving vent to stories and jokes of a humorous character among all classes.” J Among other impressions mentioned bv the speaker was.one referring to the inclination of the British to travel. It looked to me as if everybody was travelling all over the country,” he said. ‘I was told that in London the buses had cairied 35.000,000 passengers during Juno. __
