MOTOR V. TRAINS
MEETING COMPETITION HEW RAILWAY SERVICES (Special to the Herald.) CHRISTCIIURCH, this day. Where it is considered at all possible the Eailway Department is pursuing a policy" of instituting fast passenger services in order to meet motor car competition on the roads. In accordance with that policy it has decided on the speeding up of two more services. From December 6 fast passenger trains will run between Timaru and Ashburton. They will be afternoon and morning trains from each terminus. No goods will be carried. On the Fairlie branch fast passenger trains will run twice daily between Fairlie and Timaru.
"The changes will cost us a good deal of money," commented Mr. R. S. Dent, divisional superintendent for the South Island, to a reporter to-day, "but we are determined to test the possibilities in fighting road competition. Hitherto mixed trains on these lines have been the practice. Naturally mixed trains cause delays, aud as' we also have to run an occasion goods train as well we are trying the experiment of keeping the two branches of traffic distinct. We hope the public will respond."
