BIBLE SOCIETY'S WORK At the annual meeting of the- Gisborne branch of the British and Foreign Bible Society, held in the Methodist schoolroom, Bright street, last evening, the chairman, Mr. C. A. dcLautour, mentioned the interesting fact .that .in 125 years of lift the society had increased the number of versions of the Scripture from 70 to 597, so that now the Scripture can be read in nearly 600 different languages. Sister Agnes Lochore, who received the cordial thanks of the meeting for her work and organisation, suggested that an attempt should be mad* to increase the number of collectors. She also expressed thanks to the collectors who had worked hard in assisting her to report the satisfactory amount of £lB2 4s 5d for the year, it being' the largest sum collected for the society for some tin».
Mr. (.'. A. deLautour was appointed president, and Mr. J, Kay treasurer, and the following committee was elected : Mesdame.s Graham, .Frost, Laing, Stewart, Church, Garretl and Quiglev; and Messrs. Rostock. Peach, McClisk'ie. Toneyeliffe, the Protestant ministers of the district, and the Salvation Army officers.
The report and balance-sheet, were adopted, the report being as follows : "In present-ins? the annual report of the (lisborne auxiliary of the British and Foreign Bible Society, I desire first to express in some measure our sorrow because of the lass of our treasurer, the late Mr. Andrew Graham., The sad news of his death called the officers to J gether so that the auxiliary in the press and in meeting might recognise in 'some measure bis splendid work for the society. The following minute whs passed and forwarded to press ami headquarters :r-T he (lisborne auxiliary of the British and Foreign Biblo Society minutes its great appreciation of Ibe work of the late Mr. Andrew Graham as its Treasurer. 'lt. also records its thankfulness to Almighty Hod for Mr. Graham's long life of service to the society, at all times ungrudgingly given for the advancement of Hv purposes of the society in printing the Scriptures in all I languaggs and in carrying, them to all peoples to. the ends of, the ■eartli. "We are grateful for continued assistance from our Father in the. work. He has granted health and energy so that through the untiring efforts of Sister Agnes' Lochore, and the collectors, we can report forwarding to headquarters the splendid sum of £lB2 4s sd. At the May meeting. Mr. John Kay was unanimously appointed tot the position of treasurer and lias proved an enthusiastic worker, attending most faithfully to bis duties. Owing to the indisposition of the general secretary, the Rev. David ('aider, no public meetings have been held during the year. The thanks of the Auxiliary are due to the Baptist Church for the use of the rooms and church during the year. The committee meetings have been well attended and the interest taken and the assistance rendered the officers of the society is encouraging."
