NINE CHILDREN HURT

CURIOUS EXPLOSION IN STREET. A remarkable street explosion occurred in Liverpool resulting in injuries to nine children. Two boys were playing with a block of calcium carbide when they flung it down a gutter grid. The action of the wa_ter on the chemical caused a vapor to rise. This attracted to the spot a number of children one of whom dropped a lighted match down the grid. Instantly there was an explosion, anti a. sheet of flame shot up and enveloped tho children. Nine of them, suffering frden butns and shock, required hospital treatment, but only one sufferer, a boy, was detained.
