BOOTLEGGERS AT WAR

A message from Herrin, which was the scene of serious trouble some time ago. slates: "Guns are blazing here again, and war between rival factions of bootleggers seeking to control the illicit liquor traffic has broken out afresh alter a temporary lull. "The latest victim of the warfare, in which at least, a dozen men have been killed, are Mayor Stone, of a nearby village, and another citizen. They were shot down while standing in the street, by volleys fired at close range from rifles and machine guns in the hands of gangsters, who sped away in fast automobiles. Stone was recently exonerated on the grounds of self-defence after*-killing a deputy sheriff in an encounter between them a'year ago. Law-abiding citizens are asking the Federal Government to place large delegations of armed prohibition officers here to rid the countryside of contending bootlegging faction."
