It has been decided to make _extensive additions to'Lewisham Hospital, at Christchurch. the estimate for the work being about £15.000. A ballast, train consisting of a' locomotive and seven trucks was precipitated into the water when working on the construction of the new railway line involving the construction of a large bridge across the Hutt river. The bank had been undermined by a heavy fresh in the river The engine-driver had a narrow escape.
