The Californian referendum furnished one of the biggest surprises of the elections, when the State finally voted "dry" by a majority of 30,000 votes, overcoming the enormous lead recorded earlier for the "wets." It is now established that the "wet" victories generally were obtained in cities, but that the rural districts voted overwhelmingly in favor of prohibition, reversing what earlier appeared to be a certain "wet" endorsement. The referendum embodied the question of the repeal of the State Enforcement A^et.
