CARRIED BY PIGEON
STRANGE OCCURRENCE
(Special to tho Herald.) CTIRISTCHCRCH, this day
Awakened by a thud at about 4 a.m., a lady who, "with her husband, was ocouping a cabin on the ferry steamer Maori on the way to Lyttelton, switched on the lig'Nt. It was, however, no raceweek sne..k-thief she discovered, but an exhausted pigeon which had liown in through the porthole in the dark. Upon examination if was found to be the bearer of a message which, -when taken off, turned out to be a New Zealand Cup prediction. The sender .shall be nameless, but the pigeon had evidently been tossed at Riccarton, and its destination was an important sporting centre in the North Island. The message wa.s, iu short, an announcement to the person to whose loft the pigeon Was homing that Rapine would win the Cup, and (Shirlev the Stewards. Oa the strength of this providential visitation, as it seemed to the person to whom the dove returned, she decided to punt on Rapine, and Shirley. She did not take a double, however, but, put a sum on Rapine, " all .up "on Shirley.
