Adverse weather conditions prevailed for the weekly sports meeting of the Gisborne Amateur Athletic and Harrier Club, hold at, the reserve last evening. The heavy nature of the track militated against fast times being recoritcrl, but the, various events were keenly appreciated by a, fair attendance of spectators. Great interest was evinced in the ladies’ special test race over 120yds., which, was conducted for the purpose of assisting in the selection of the team to visit Wellington. After a splendid race Miss R. McCarthy narrowly defeated Miss Bilham, with Aliss Wilson third. A new member, E. Forrest, was successful in the 120yds. men’s handicap, his speedy running and determined finish greatly surprising competitors and spectators. The result of the If nine eyelei handicap was a tribute- r«> ihe liandicnppi i. who was successful in bunching eight riders for the dash to tjie line, Davis just defeating Alunii by the barest of margins. An interested spectator of the moot - in L r was Mr. W. A. Low, honorary organiser of the Olympic games association, who was a former 440vcis. and 880yds. New Zealand champion. A splendid start was effected, and at 100 yards Aliss Eastwood looked a winner, but, faded away, allowing Miss Ale Gar thy to breast the tape first with Aliss Haisman two feet away second, milv inches separating the scratch runner from the) second place getter. 120vds Men’s Handicap, first heat.— E. Forrest. 1: H., Martin, 2; G. Nicol. o. Time, 12 1-5 sec. Sutcliffe got a fly on the gun, the - rest of the finalists moving together at the start. Martin went through the field at a great pace, but could not sustain his effort. Forrest, who had been prominent throughout,u ante away at the finish with a groat, hurst of speed to win by a yard from Martin, with Nicol inches away third. If- Aide Gvcle Handicap.--H. Davis (180vds.), 1;* IT. Alarm (165vd5.),2: X. Bai (165yds), 5. Time. 4mm. 11 see. A feature of tin? race was the splendid vide of Algie from scratch. With two laps to go, he made a fine effort and gradually closed on the field, hut was just beaten out of place. Davies, tlm winner, made a great sprint up the straight, heating Munti bv hnlf-a-length with four riders close up lighting for third position.
