The tomato industry at Nelson lias received another severe shock, the second within a month, when a severe frost on Tuesday morning considerable havoc with outside plants. The Wood area, which in former years has usually escaped late frosts, is hard hit, while growers in oilier parts oi the town have also suffered severely. Tens of thousands of plants (have boon put in during the last week, while many more have been placed in the beds ready for transplanting. Some growers have suffered more severely than others, while there are a munher of more fortunate ones who have not yet planted out in the open to anv extent. Inquiries with a view to the establishment of greater shipping facilities between Wellington and Gisborne have been,made by the Wellington Chamber of Commerce, but as a result of tiio information gained the matter is not to be pursued further at present. ;\t the last, meeting of the Chamber the secretary intimated that in six months the cargoes sent from Auckland to Gisborne, including cement, sugar, and coal, were .14,2.'!7 tons, as against 4056 tons from Wei-' lington. ‘‘ I think wo w ill have to lot the matter drop, in the face of the figures,” remarked the president (Mr. ,T. R.
