MARORO'S LONG VOYAGE
CALM AND STORM " TINY VESSEL'S GREAT FIGHT SYDNEY. Sept, 24. .\ momentous voyage was concluded on Thursdav night when the schooner Maroro, from Cisbornc, literally limpell into Sydney harbor, having taken 55 days to cover what is usually a 20 days' trip. Had luck struck the Maroro as soon as she put out of Gisborne, for all canvas had to be reefed as a sudden storm struck hi*r. Huge waves smashed over her, flooding the cabins, and injuring several of the members of the crew of tdn. In (hat storm she was driven 750 miles, and when it subsided it was followed by 30 days of light head-winds. Then camci another gale, "which drove the little craft to within three miles of the treacherous Elizabeth Reef. It was an anxious time, for the crew realised only 100 well that a change of wind would mean disaster. For hours she was in danger of piling up on the'coral. Only great good fortune kept- them from that fate, there followed a three days' calm, until on Monday, drift.iun- rather than sailing, the crew sighted"" Port Stephens, on the north coast of New South. Wales. A tug was signalled, and the) Maroro was eventually towed into Sydney harbor. She was listing dangerously, and the crew were short of water, and living on a third of their usual rations,at the time the coast, was sighted. tier master, Captain Jones, admitted that he had had a trying time. His chief thoughts—and in this he echoed f?,e sentiments of the whole, of the ertfw—were for a good square meal and a clean, dry bed. "They will be a welcome change," he said, "after short rations and a wet bunk." "It was stated that the Maroro travelled 4500 miles on her voyage, while the stenmer distance for' the same trip is 1500 miles.
