BRITISH MANUFACTURERS ALERT

During his recent visit to Leicester, Nottingham and Northampton, Mr. Frank Goldberg, of Wellington, had an opportunity of observing at first hand the effect of the recent general strike and 11n' present coal strike upon industry. He found the British manufacturer full of optimism for the future. The manner in which, the .general strike has been handled by the British Government- was an indication of the soundness of the British system of constitutional Government, One inherent characteristic of people living in the Old Country in their staunch and adequate recognition and support of those in whom the authority to govern and control has been vested. Although the present coal strike had become protracted, in view of the conflictiug issues involved, and although the effect of the passing of the Eighthour Bill was not yet apparent, the

(■general feeling, Air. Goldberg says, is i that a compromise between the miners ! and mine-owners will shortly be cffcct- : ed, to the fullive benefit of the mining ! industry. In the meantime certain inJdusirios are necessarily suffering on * account of the coal shortage, but | everywhere there is a fording of optini- ; ism with regard to trade prospects in I the near future. | While the present coal restrictions | continue manufacturers are turning ( their attention seriously to the needs l of Australia and New Zealand. Evcryj where there is a feeling the tremendi ous possibilities of the markets of the j Southern Seas must be attacked with ! more concentration titan hitherto. No i longer has the British manufacturer a | vague idea of the class of consumer to j whom his product is being offered. He : has realised that inter-Empire trade is j essential 1o his future welfare.
