As soon as iho news was received Hie Harlior Board tug, Toia. was despatched lo the scene, followed later by the Lnion Company's Terawhili. The G.P.O. reports: “Xora station advises that the Opua went ashore on the rocks our from the homestead at three o’clock fhs morning. during a heavy fog. The steamer appears to bo fast on the rocks about LOOyds. from the shore. The chances of re-floating are doubtful. There were no passengers, and no lives have boon lost. There is a light north-east wind and smooth sea at present.” Deports from the station are that the vessel is well up on the rocks. It is impossible from lim shoie to form any opinion of the chances of re-floating. Captain Fowler -and his officers are still aboard, hut the crew is on shore. The vessel has no cargo, the steamer coming to Wellington lo load for West (mast ports. The Opua is a vessel of 575 tons gross. Formerly the Hnmovnie, she was taken over by the Opua Company in 1920. and by the Anchor Company last year. in 1924 she ran aground near Farewell Light, but was .floated off at high tide.
