OPUA ASHORE
MISHAP DURING FOG VESSEL NOT DAMAGED SOME OF THE CREW LANDED (Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON, this day. The steamer Opua, hound from Gisborne In Wellington, is ashore on the rocks at Torn, a few miles cast of Cape I’a Riser. Mr. Edic. Riddiford’s estate reports that some of the men arc ashore, and the others are standing by the vessel, which docs not scorn damaged. The Opua is not carrying any cargo. A heavy fog prevailed in the vicinity this morning.
The Opua is a tine, trim steamer r.t 575 gross and 288 net. tons, owned by the Anchor Line, and for some months ran under the agency of the. Union Steamship Co. between Gisborne and the West Coast South Island ports. She was built at Pointhouse, Glasgow, in. 1902 and registered at ‘ Lyttelton in 1921, being owned formerly by Mr Daniel Reese, of Christchurch. Her length is 184 ft,. 2in., and her breadth 28ft. lin. She was formerly known as the Ramovnie, and it is understood that she was at one time in Australian waters. The Opua left Gisborne for Wellington and West. Coast, ports at 11.50 p.m. on Thursday. Captain Fowler was in command.
