ALIEN WORKERS
PERMITS' SYSTEM. NEW INDUSTRIES. LONDON, Sept. IS. The report of the Ministry for Labor for 1925 gives some particulars of the conditions under which aliens are permitted to enter Great Britain to take up employment. In tlio granting of permits regard is given to the conditions of the labor market, and aliens are not admitted to take work which could be equally well done by British subjects or foreigners already domiciled in the country. . The' total number of permits refused lias been 1104, and there were 5349 granted. In the case oi the hotel and restaurant employees, permits were issued in most cases on conditions that a British youth was sent abroad in exchange for the alien, in order that he could obtain facilities lor learning foreign languages, and for gaining experience in the hotel business abroad. A limited number of permits was granted to assist in setting up new industries in Great Britain, such as artificial silk ami beet sugar, and only on condition that aliens were employed to train British subjects’ in new' processes.
