MILK CHEQUES
REDUCED STAMP DUTY .ON ORDERS. The Hawera Chamber of Commerce at its last meeting discussed the ques-' tion of stamp duty op milk ordetrs. These were alleged to be excessive .in the interests of business, and tiie matter was left to a sub-committee to inquire into. In the course of its investigations the committee ascertained that the minimum charge for orders was ss, and in the case of general orders, reached 12s 6d. Mr. Charles Dickie was communicated with, and he got' into- touch with his brother, the member for the district, who was at the time in'Wellingon. Mr. H. G. Dickie seized an early opportunity of waiting on the Hon. Downie Stewart. Minister of Finance, and the result of his activities is seen.in a provision made by the Minister for a reduction of the m'iiiinum charge h'nm 5s to 2d in every £2O. Although this is a step in the right direction, and one that will be appreciated by the small dairy farmer, local opinion' is in favor of a uniform stamp duty of 2d on all milk orders.
