FOUR GASSED
• RUBBER BAG EXPLODES NEARLY A TBASEDY MELBOURNE, Sept. 12. Four men wen 1 gassed when a rubber gas ba<v exploded at Qakleigh this morning. Workmen were engaged tapping a 6m. gas main, and! were m the excavation when the explosion occurred. They were ; George M'YValters, 35, condition serious; George Head, 50, I'. O'Neill, and George M'Nally. According to the story told by the men, they had cut a hole in the main and were preparing for a junction pipe. For some unknown reason the gas bag affixed to the hole exploded. They attempted to repair the damage by placing stops in the hole. M'Wallers fell unconscious, however, and his companions went to his assistance. They were affected also by tho large, volume of gas that had escaped, and they just managed to drag themselves out of the bole. Fortunately, an oxygen pump was obtained at a nearby shop, and it, was applied to M'Walters. If it had not been for that apparatus, the doctors stated that M'Walters would have died, as he was in a cerv serious condition.
