TANGIER CONTROVERSY

CONFERENCE SUGGESTED SPAIN WITHDRAWS CLAIM JOINT CONTROL ESSENTIAL (Elec. Tel. Copyright.—United Press Assn.) (Sydney Sun Cables.) (Received September 18, 2 p.m.) LONDON, .September 17.

The Times says: “Spain lias a bandonned her claim to Tangier. She has sent Notes to London and Paris, but merely proposes a conference to discuss the admission of Italy to an agreement covering Tangier. The British official view is that there is no longer need to hasten negotiations. It would he better if France and Spain came to an understanding, and then communicated it to Britain.”

The Daily News reveals Unit all arrangements were made for an Anglo-Fruuco-SpanisJi conference in Paris on \ovember 8, to discuss Tangier, and says: “Spain made a false move in signing the Italo-Spanish agreement on August 10. The conference was called off. Spain insisted on linking up the Tangier claim with a claim for a permanent seat at Geneva. Italy, did not befriend Spain at Genova, and is less likely to take up Tangier. The British view is unchanged. Britain is willing to readjust Spain’s sphere of influence, but Tangier must not fall to any single power. ’'
