ENDING SLAVERY

Burma intends to emulate Nepaul by entirely ridding the province of slavery. An expedition is preparing to visit the densely populated, unadministered territory in North Burma. between the Maliklia and Muhniku rivers, where many thousands .of slaves await emancipation.
In Nepaul the last traces have been wiped out, and freedom given to 60.000 slaves. The compensation paid by the Government to the owneiy, varied from 20 to 100 rupees for each slave, though many owners waived compensation claims.
After the emancipation the Maharajah throw open vast tracts of cultivable lands to ex-slaves.
