ABSOLUTE DAIRY CONTROL
NOW IN OPERATION A REVOLUTIONARY SYSTEM I On Wednesday last absolute control of all the dairy produce of the Dominion bivame an* accomplished fact, and the dairy industry entered upon the greatest 'experiment yet made in -its history. The adoption of absolute control affects every company and every dairyman in every district, and means that £20,C00,C00 worth of produce, will be controlled by the board. For twelve months and more there have been many arguments for and against absolute 'control brougt forward, but the time is now past when that aspect of the matter should be considered. As the system is now being enforced it behoves all dairymen to rally round the board and try and make the iwheme a success. If the change eventually benefits the dairymen as a whole, there will be no dissension, but is obvious that with changing seasons and conditions, there will be continual opposition in some quarters to contvoi. AXTAOONLSINO MERCHANTS. A great deal has been beard about the way iu which the I'oo'.ey street butter merchants who have, handled New Zealand butter for so long, will accept the change, and it. has even been ■suggested that they will ' drop Xew Zealand butter entirely. This bogey need hardly receive consideration, for although it' has been brought up previously when meat and fruit were being controlled, it lias not yet proved an actual fact.
.The board has already secured reductions in freight and insurance, and although these were obtained prior to the enforcement of absolute control, it may be assumed that with greater power, the board will lie in a position to do more good for the producers. The experiment has been undertaken for good or evil, and the only manner in whk-h its success or otherwise can be gauged will be by the results of the next few seasons. While there will be many who will be prepared to see danger in every move of the hoard, the majority of'dairymen will be prepared to give the new system a fair trial. Poverty Hay dairymen were in the main opposed to absolute control, but that is no reason why they should not support the efforts of the board now that control i,-, an accomplished fact.
