RUDELY SHOCKED
MEDICAL ETIQUETTE SURGEON ADVERTISED ON TEA SHOP MENU CARDS jElec. Tei. Copyright--United Press Assn. {Australian and N.Z. Cable Association.) LONDON, September 1. .Medical etiquette was rudely shocked by the appearance of a photograph of a famous surgeon, Sir Arbuthnot Lane, upon the menu cards of a chain of prominent tea shops. This 'was the outcome of Sir A. Lane writing an article on athletes’ diet in , his capacity of president of the new Health Society. This was printed on - the back of the menu cards with Sir A. Lane’s photograph, supplied un- . known to him. Three doctors, seeing * the photograph, ’phoned the British Medical Association, an£ complained' of the breach of medical etiquette. The proprietor was informed he must destroy the menus. He said he could not destroy the 40,000 printed, and open the shops without menu cards. Eventually the proprietor agreed to obliterate the photographs by pasting over them slips of gummed paper. This led to thousands of customers asking the reason for the pasting, tire waitresses answering: “That’s Sir A. Lane.” Following a complaint he received upon the subject Sir A. Lane resigned his membership of the British Medical Association, expressing regret he should have been unwittingly involved in an incident against the etiquette of tlie profession. It now appears that the British Medical Association is regarding Sir A. Lane's communication as not wholly meeting the case, and asked for a definite disclaimer through the tea shop firm. .Sir A. Lane lias ' been strenuously
advocating that doctors should bo free from the disciplinary restraints of the 8.M.A., and also attacked its filling that* doctors must not write signed articles on medical subjects.
