WESTPORT’S TRADE.
LARGE EXPORTS OF COAL. (Per Press Association.) WESTPORT, last niglit. The coal trade of Westport is on the up-grade, due in no small measure ter the number of large overseas steamers calling there for hunkers. The Crossbill and the Min left yesterday for Nauru and Eureka respectively and the Avmeric is now iu port loading bunkers prior to sailing for Ocean Island. As there is only one crane on llie wharf capable of loading these large vessels at all states of the tides, the Minister is being urged to equip the port with another one, or more high lifting cranes, so as to facilitate the despatch. of overseas’ and other big steamers. The CrossliilL got away yesterday for Nauru after being detained since Thursday of last week,, through trouble with the crew chiefly over a complaint that the forecastle was incanitarv. This was fumigated by the local health officer. Two firemen deserted the vessel, but these work replaced, and the vessel got away later in the day. The Alin got away to quick despatch, and as the Aymcrie as the only large vessel in port at the present time, she should do likewise.
