AFFORESTATION.

AN EXPERT’S STATEMENT. WORLD’S TIMBER SHORTAGE. (Received July 7, 11 a.m.) ' PERTH, July 7. Air. W. Fraser, afforestation expert, who is returning to New Zealand as a passenger by the Narkunda, says tire annual consumption per head of population of timber and its products is heaviest in America, while Australia takes second place. Mr. Eraser said there is no possibility of the world’s shortage of timber being overtaken unless the timber-growing areas in various countries are systematically replanted. He contends that neither the Australian nor the New Zealand Governments are doing sufficient in regard to afforestation. Norway and Sweden are the only countries where provision is slightly ahead of consumption. Tlie new growth of American forests is only about 24 per cent, of the consumptiqn. . ' -
