Harvey James, in his jitesidenl ial addiess at the annual Methodist Conference. in nn all-embracing attack on present-day England, said: “Paganism is rife. Sunday cinemas and Sunday games are multiplied with unblushing effrontery. The ever-widening curse of gambling is being stimulated by the press, encouraged by olliienldom, and often connived nl by magistrates. Fiction is sletqied in sexuality, and the press is serving tip court garbage. England can only be saved by the rein in to sound due tri nes. As a counter-blast, comes Hie presidential address of the Royal Sanitary Instil ufe Congress, by Sir Oeorge Newman. chief medical oliieer of the '.Ministry of Health and the Board of Educe! ion. He said: “ England is healthier than ever, chiefly because of the week-end habit of enjoyment and surf-bathing. Then: is a big increase in sobriety, and improvement in diet, and a steady trend towards simplicity and common-sense in dress. People are more cleanly. There is a wider appreciation of games, and Hie open nir. The daily press is playing un invaluable part in giving publicity to ovoryl hing designed to improve health am! brighten life.”
