THE WOOL POSITION.

OUTLOOK HEALTHY. SYDNEY, June 21, Generally the selection of wool submitted at recent Sydney auctions was far from tempting in character. Apart from the autumn-shorn lines forward from the far west ami north-west, which .were deep in staple, sound, and of average quality, the offerings were miscellaneous, consisting of erulehings, lambs, and other oddments, in view of that fact, states Winchcombe, Carson, Ltd.’s weekly report, no complaint can be lodged regarding the competition experienced. Any well-grown, good class lines found ready purchasers at firm figures, but. very faulty parcels oil doubtful yield commanded only irregular bidding. Skirtings and lambs’ wool were in strong request.

"Compared with a year ago,’’ Hie report adds, “the position of supplies undoubtedly inspires confidence. In Australia practically half a million less will be available. The same depletion of stocks is noticeable in .South Africa and South America. The manufacturing trade has apparently overtaken the wool surplus which was showing a year ago, and the quantities available are now only on usual scale. That situation is healthy. It gives no sign of inspiring anv meteoric flights in regard to prices, but it is undoubtedly an inspiration towards stability in values. During the past season Japan, France, Germany, and Italy have consumed the staple in expanding quantities, ami their requirements are evidently si ill unsatisfied, judging by their recent activity. We do not expect any marked. rise in prices, but the'trade generally will he surprised if the coining season is not successfully negotiated at. figures at least in the vicinity of late rates.”
