SYDNEY’S UNDERGROUND.
420 TRAINS AN HOUR. \ SYDNEY, June 24. When tlaJ Sydney Central Railway Station was built it was looked upon by not a few people as a structure whose massiveness and grandeur were not justified. To-day it. is so congested that it. is a wonder people are not injured or killed in the nightly battles for trains and seals. Tn the light of the. congestion there the question has been raised as to how long the city underground railway will suffice for Sydney’s growing population. On the basis of the official view that it will cope with another million people, it ought to be adequate for the needs of the mclropolitis for another twenty years or so. The ultimate capacity of the railway will he. 420 trains an hour, with ability to cope with 500,000 passengers an hour. The railway is growing stmdi'.v under the feet of citizens, who see nothing of the gigantic project except earthworks at occasioned points. The first section is due to open on October 1.
