BURIED ALIVE.
WOMAN’S FATE. SIDES OF WELL COLLAPSE. GRAFTON (N.S.W.), June 20. This afternoon Mr. Percy Caine, and his wife, Mrs. Helen Hilda C'aine, of Ulmarra, Clarence river, were busy removing bricks from an old well, situated in the back yard of the house. Mrs. Caine, wishing to help her husband, persisted in goinjr down the well, which is about 16ft. deep. Going down by means of a ladder, she proceeded to hand up bricks to her husband. The job was almost completed, and Mr. Ckiine was removing the ladder from one side of the well to the other, when he heard liis wife call out: “Oh, the earth is falling in.” Hardly had she said this than the sides of the well collapsed, completely burying the unfortunate woman. Help as immediately obtained, and Q willing band of men started to dig frantically in the hope of rescuing Mrs. Caine. The work had not loner proceeded, when it was discovered that a chimney stack immediately above the we.l would nave to be taken down. This was done as rapidly as possible, and the victim was reached, but too late, for a doctor pronounced life extinct. Mrs. Caine was 28 years of age, and leaves four children, the eldest being nine years of age, and the youngest four years of age.
